SLAVERY

Black Slave Ownership - Did blacks own slaves in America?

According to federal census reports, on June 1, 1860 there were nearly 4.5 million Negroes in the United States, with fewer than four million of them living in the southern slaveholding states. Of the blacks residing in the South, 261,988 were not slaves. Of this number, 10,689 lived in New Orleans. The country's leading African American historian, Duke University professor John Hope Franklin, records that in New Orleans over 3,000 free Negroes owned slaves, or 28 percent of the free Negroes in that city.

The standard image of Southern slavery is that of a large plantation with hundreds of slaves. In fact, such situations were rare. Fully 3/4 of Southern whites did not even own slaves; of those who did, 88% owned twenty or fewer. Whites who did not own slaves were primarily yeoman farmers. Practically speaking, the institution of slavery did not help these people.

There is no way we can answer all the questions that has been asked about slavery.  All we can do is to help share the facts and the truth.
SLAVERY IN ANY FORM IS WRONG.
One thing we need to do is remember that from the beginning of America till 1865, slavery in America was a way of life.  As a matter of fact, slavery was a way of life all over the world in that time period.  Over time, man started to see the wrong in slavery and his heart started to change and so did history.
